Drum and bass/Jungle was give birth in England but found a second home in NYC quickly after. Drum and bass is a multiracial music and came from the multiracial areas of England. NYC being the “melting pot” is quite identical and adopted jungle/drum and bass as its own. From the 60`s to the 2000`s NYC was also one of the greatest centers for experimental music so it was natural that new yorkers would take drum and bass, pull it apart and put it back together into something new the originators didn’t think of. One result was “illbeint” music. Illbient was a complete mix of ambient, drum and bass, hip hop, and latin music. Very elastic as a scene, it captured nyc small circles by storm and made its way onto numerous recordings. Illbient was very natural in it’s birth and just as natural in its death once newspapers started to notice. Many of the core creators ditched the music as drum and bass loss favor and the illbient scene itself became more famous than the originators intended.
Culture 3 is a direct homage to the illbient scene that influenced me so and the creators who have almost all grown older and become forgotten by time and social media’s focus on the new thing. Illbient took place when there were only magazines and newspapers and word of mouth. No sns. No cell phones. Only records, mixers, home telephones, cds, pagers(!), illegal clubs, chill rooms, instantaneous park raves with a records, mixers, and speakers, and cassette tapes. It was the lack of exposure that allowed it to grow like a plant. If it were now, I can only imagine how it would grow or not.
I was a passenger of the scene stumbling on parties here and there, buying the records, and going to midnight concerts dancing to drum and bass til 4 in the morning. There were few musical rules then. The scene didn’t want them and created music to fit that scenario. I was confused and fascinated.
